Roleplaying - Tabletops

Roleplaying has been described as 'collaborative storytelling' and 'make-believe for grown-ups'. In convention roleplaying, a group of players get together with a GM to pretend to be other people for a while. Each player usually adopts one character for the duration of the game, and describes how that character acts in relation to the other characters and to the GM's plot.

The GM acts as head storyteller, director or referee.

Most of the events in this section are more suitable for team entry than individual entry. However, if you would like to enter as an individual, we will attempt to match you up with other individuals or partial teams.

Roleplaying - Tabletops tournaments run for one, two or three sessions. Each blurb lists the team size and the game system used. 'Systemless' tournaments run with basic (or no) mechanics, and are described by genre or style. Available session times for each tournament are shown on the entry form timetable.

Unless stated otherwise, all characters and background are provided by the tournament organisers. These may be handed out at registration or at the beginning of the session.

Contact your tournament organisers when you arrive at the convention, to check that what you think you're doing agrees with what they think you're doing.

You've just spent your formative years at the prestigious Assassin's Guild of Ankh-Morpork, on the corner of Filligree street and Widdershins Broadway. You spent years "diligently" studying the various arts of the guild – from how to comport yourself with dignity, to memorising all the useful (1) sections of the Little Book of Solvents, and studying various methods of inhumation involving spoons and marmalade(2).

Hogswatch Day is approaching, and you and your colleagues are set to graduate. There's just one more assignment left in your way - INH3065

Advanced Inhumation, the Assassin's Guild's infamous group project.

School can be fun. School can be challenging. School can be deadly.

Especially when your school is in a world carried by four elephants floating through space on the back of an astrometrically-sized turtle where one in a million chances happen nine times out of ten.

(1) Useful: adj. being examinable. (Source: Ankh-Morpork Student's Dictionary)

(2) This somewhat untraditional method was used by Asine Malacant against the then head of the Fool's Guild after he was heard to say

that 'one can never have too much marmalade'. Needless to say, Asine convinced him otherwise.

Advanced Inhumation: INH3065 is a GURPS Discworld game for 4 to 6 players.

We hope you enjoy your time as young assassins at the prestigious Ankh Morpork Assassin's Guild School.

'He had no desire at all to return to Gryffindor Tower so early, nor to tell Ron and Hermione what he had just seen. What was making Harry feel so horrified and unhappy was not being shouted at or having jars thrown at him; it was that he knew how it felt to be humiliated in the middle of a circle of onlookers, knew exactly how Snape had felt as his father had taunted him, and that judging from what he had just seen, his father had been every bit as arrogant as Snape had always told him.'

 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

All of a sudden the noise in the square ceases. Everyone's attention is turned to a high balcony at the head of the square. After a brief fanfare a rich-robed official appears and announces: "Citizens of Gondor: - the King's Alchemist, the right honourable Celin, has disappeared. He was last seen in the fortress of Tharagrond, heading north to visit relatives. His Majesty is offering 1,000 gp reward for information concerning his whereabouts, and/or his rescue. His Majesty is prepared to grant requests instead of the reward if it is in his power to do so."

Later, as you stand at the Harlond docks awaiting the ship to take you to Tharagrond, you overhear a heated argument nearby between two men, one dressed in expensive furs, the other in the plain black robes of a monk. The monk says: "Who does he think his is, claiming his school is better than ours?" to which the richly dressed man replies: "The Minas Anor Monastery is funded by His Majesty, who is glad that someone else is prepared to put the expense." The rich man then leaves, leaving a still angry monk at the dockside, as your ship pulls into the dock.

This is the Future.

This is what we Built.

We stood for change and for change we made a mighty stand, We played, danced, fought and cried for a decade. Like Willing sacrifices we stood up to their law, their world.

We Lost.

For a Decade I have been your symbol, your inspiration,

I have been hunted instead of you, bled instead of you,

My friends Died instead of you...

For you.

And in the end you give up, you take up jobs,

sold your souls for the latest upgrades and firmware,

turned on me, as I never would have upon you.

Burn

It is an age of genetic engineering, robotics and seamless communications. The year is 2025. The place is Japan

Steamed Buns, Shomai, Oh My...

Something bad is going down in Yokohama's Chinatown!

The wet streets cast reflections of the red and gold garishly painted buildings as the dark grey clouds hang low overhead. The young men with closely cut hair and tattooed arms sit at the counter, looking out into the street. They slurp their ramen, but they are watching the street with eyes alert. From the alley, with a swish of dark trench coats, boots splashing in the puddles and eyes concealed behind dark glasses, step a group of men. The young men at the counter stop chewing, their muscles tense and eyes fixed intently on their enemies. Their enemies, normally as alert as the young men who watch them, stroll past nonchalantly, smug in the safety that comes with being on their home turf. Once they have passed by, the young men get up and walk outside to the van parked at the kerb, and open it's rear door. Out steps a robot...

Good evening, this is Futama Jouga and Sakagura Mirai with the Tomido TV 6pm News. Our breaking story tonight - "In Yokohama's China Town today. Another revenge killing in broad daylight..."

The members of the Special Mobile Unit are back for more manga inspired mayhem for four players in episode 10 of their continuing saga.

Previous episodes of this series of games have been run at past Arcanacon and Conquest but previous knowledge of the games is not necessary to play
