“The gods are a myth – even the oldest history books only say that the false gods were chased out of Auraria more than a thousand years ago. Magic and science helped us get by, and we walled up our cities to keep the demons out. It is every person’s duty to spend the year after reaching adulthood to join the Watchers, Walkers, and Scavengers (WWS) guild – to watch the walls, to guard the shipments and to scavenge the old technologies. After serving one year, the person is considered a permanent citizen.
Having no gods didn’t stop people preaching in the street, offering hope and salvation in one hand, damnation for sin with the other. It never helped them in their year with the WWS and few would survive to become citizens.”
